- Title
- An exploration of the use of social media to encourage student engagement in an undergraduate nursing course
- Summary
- The aim of this research is to evaluate the use of podcasts as a learning activity in a final year undergraduate module. . To explore student's perspectives on the usefulness of podcasts for their learning . To investigate staff perspectives on the usefulness of podcasts in the 'flipped classroom' . To reflect on the process of producing podcasts for the module . Based on the findings, make recommendations on the efficacy of implementing podcasts. A descriptive mixed-methods approach is being adopted using the 4Q model of evaluation (Smith 2008) as a conceptual framework. A sample has been drawn from the target population of Senior Sophister Nursing students (205) who completed the module in Hilary term 2017-2018, academic staff who facilitate tutorials on the module (8) and the 2 module leaders who designed and produced the podcasts. Data collection includes an online questionnaire adapted from Merhi (2012, a focus group and reflective analysis. Students were recruited through an announcement on Blackboard and the link to an online, anonymous questionnaire. Staff who facilitated tutorials in 2017-2018 academic year were invited through email to participate in an audio-recorded, focus group discussion following completion of the tutorials. The 2 module leaders will engage in reflective analysis utilising Boud et al's (1985) reflective framework to examine the process of designing and producing the podcasts. Descriptive analysis of the findings of the questionnaire will be undertaken. The focus group data and the outcome of the reflective analysis will be transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis framework of Braun & Clarke (2006).

- An Evaluation of the Elective Module: Madness in the Movies
- Summary
- The use of cinema in medical education is well established in the literature and is part of a trend to introduce Arts and Humanities subjects into the science-based curriculum (Datta 2013). However, this approach is less prevalent in nurse education. This study aims to address this gap in pre-registration nurse education in Ireland by evaluating students'learning experience on the module Madness in the Movies. The specific objectives of the research project are: 1.to determine students' understanding of the influence of contemporary cinema on societal views of mental illness; 2.the extent to which students have used a range of tools to critique and analyse the portrayal of mental illness in film; 3.the extent to which they have compared and contrasted the portrayal of mental illness in film with current trends and approaches to mental health 4.The extent to which they have related the analysis of mental health in film to their own personal development and professional practice 5.their proficiency in making informed contributions to the module-related blog

- A LONGITUDINAL SURVEY OF UNDERGRADUATE NURSING STUDENTS' EDUCATIONAL ENGAGEMENT IN THEIR COURSE OF STUDY.
- Summary
- Study Aim: to determine the level of educational engagement of nursing students in the senior sophistor year (2012-2013) of their undergraduate course and to identify any changes in their level of engagement since 2010 when the Faculty of Health Sciences Survey of Student Engagement was originally administered to this group. Study objectives 1. The quality of the students' educational engagement will be examined in relation to their perceptions of: a. The level of academic challenge offered by the course b. The quality and quantity of staff /student interactions c. Active and collaborative learning d. Enriching educational experiences e. Supportive campus environment f. Their Approach to learning Background:The Survey of Student Engagement (SSE) obtains information regarding student participation in academic courses and activities that institutions provided for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Survey items represent empirically confirmed good practices in undergraduate education.

- EVALUATION OF THE POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY, TCD
- Summary
- The aim of this study is to evaluate the postgraduate research experience in the School of Nursing and Midwifery by seeking the perspectives of current research students and recent graduates to improve the quality of future support and to contribute to postgraduate research policy development. A secondary aim of the study is to determine the utility of the questionnaire as a tool for gaining feedback from postgraduate researchers. Until very recently there has been no overall policy to gather feedback from TCD postgraduate research students. On the 17th April 2013, the University Council agreed to a proposal from a working group of the Graduate Studies Committee that research students be invited to provide feedback through an online survey. Responsibility for implementing this proposal on a pilot basis has been devolved to the Schools. The study proposed in this application will meet this responsibility as well as making a contribution to the research evidence on the postgraduate research experience. Research Approach and Design: a cross sectional descriptive survey design. Data Collection: The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey developed by the UK Higher Education Academy will be used for this study

- A Survey of Factors Influencing Student Response Rates to Online Course Surveys
- Summary
- Aim: to investigate factors that may influence undergraduate students' decision to respond to online surveys in order to identify ways of increasing response rates. Objectives: 1. to identify demographic features of students who do and do not respond to online course surveys; 2. to explore students' attitudes to online course surveys; 3. to assess what can be learned from students' engagement in the evaluation process. The survey has been piloted with undergraduate students in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Before the end of 2013-3014 academic year a follow-up focus group will be held with nursing students and the revised survey will be rolled out in other Schools across College.
