Congratulations to Dr John Bosco Conama on being awarded a Civic Honour by his home county, Roscommon. A Civic Honour is a prestigious award from a Local Authority, that can be conferred on a person or group for outstanding achievement in sport, culture, community and youth activities. He received his Civic Honour Award from Roscommon County Council at a Civic Reception held in Roscommon Arts Centre on Monday 15 December 2025.
Dr Conama was recognised for his election to Fellowship in Trinity College Dublin and for his significant contributions to research, equality, accessibility, and linguistic rights for the Irish Deaf Community, particularly through his leadership in promoting Irish Sign Language (ISL) in education and policy.
Dr Conama said "being nominated by my beloved county is both a profound honour and a source of immense pride. My family roots in Roscommon stretch back centuries, and although I left at a young age to attend a school for the deaf in Dublin, the county has always remained close to my heart. This recognition is particularly meaningful because, despite not having lived there for many years, I have retained a deep fondness for Roscommon - especially its GAA and sporting traditions. To receive this award is a reminder of the enduring connection between identity, heritage, and community."
