The connection between Ireland and Sankt Gallen goes back to early seventh century, when the Irish monk Gallus established a hermitage that would ultimately become the site of the world-famous monastery and library. The modern Stiftsbibliothek of Sankt Gallen still houses one of the most important collections of Irish manuscripts in the world.
On June 16th Trinity will host a one-day symposium to celebrate the return to Ireland of the Sankt Gallen Irish manuscripts for the Words on the Wave exhibition hosted by the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street. This one-day event, intended to complement to exhibition, will highlight some of the most prized pieces in the collection and address the wide range of sources preserved in Sankt Gallen, including the early Irish grammatical works, canon law, hagiography, liturgy, biblical books and Old Irish charms.
Speakers will include Dáibhi Ó Cróinín, Bernard Meehan, Roy Flechner, Pádraic Moran, Rachel Moss, Joseph Flahive, John Carey, Immo Warntjes, Sadbh Carrick and myself as well as our special guests, Dr Cornel Dora and Philipp Lenz of the Stiftsbibliothek St Gallen. The event will be followed by a reception in the Royal Irish Academy.
