COVID-19 Project:

The role of host immune responses in clearance of COVID-19 or the role, if any, of host immune responses in contributing to severe respiratory pathogenesis of COVID-19 infections is not yet known. To determine if host immune responses play a potential role in the evolution of mild or severe COVID-19 illness an analysis of gene expression profiles linked to inflammation and immunity in severe and mild COVID-19 patients will be performed. Prognostic indicators hold a clinical value in that they can minimise the risks factors associated with poor prognosis including the low frequency of respiratory specimen collection, clinical spectrum of this disease being very heterogeneous, inadequate adherence to standard supportive therapy and the lack of measurable genetic material detection in samples. This additional analysis proposed has the potential to prevent the development of severe forms of this disease, limit late inadequate response, provide optimal therapeutic interventions, and prioritise the patients in need of ICU attention.
