“The only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little farther down our particular path than we have yet got ourselves.”

E. M. Forster

Welcome! This is the first edition to what I hope will be a lasting tradition at a university already so rich in tradition. The Trinity Student Medical Journal (TSMJ) is much more than an avenue for students to highlight their work and experiences. It is a forum for medical education, one that presents the opportunity for medical students to share their ideas with each other and faculty. Medicine yields much to discuss, and I am excited to offer a voice for students in that discussion.

As the founding General Manager of the TSMJ’s year 2000 committee, I have had the opportunity to work closely with a group of people committed to producing a journal of outstanding quality. I can only hope that we have come close to our goals and set a standard that will be maintained for years to come. So let me take mention of some of the many who deserve it.

First of all, this project could not succeed without the support of the faculty foremost the two who agreed to stand behind us as advisors, Professor Conleth Feighery and Professor Moira O’Brien. These two offered immeasurable enthusiasm and support, while recognizing the autonomy of the committee. Their mentorship gives everyone, students and faculty alike, the right to accept this ‘student’ journal as their own. Their encouragement gave the Journal a head-start in the search for the credibility that we wish to attain.

Encouragement came from other Trinity faculty as well. I can speak for the entire committee when saying the response of the medical staff in Dublin intensified our motivation. Likewise, the explosive interest from pharmaceutical companies and other Dublin companies was highly appreciated. I hope the Journal fulfils their expectations and draws their continued sponsorship in future editions.

Another responsive group that perhaps takes precedence over all others is the students. The Journal is yours. Let it stimulate your search for understanding and your desire to become better physicians. Without your submissions we would have no journal at all.

Thank yous are in order for the Student Economic Review, in its 14th year, and their advisor Professor John O’Hagan whose expertise guided us in the beginning. Their professionalism and literary elegance have contributed greatly to our foundations.

Above all else, I am indebted to the committee – Adrian, Christine, Karen, Kate, Kwan, Marc, May, Raj, Rukshana, Sonia, and Steve. Each redefined roles and pushed efforts to new extremes. Thank you. I would also like to note the enthusiasm of the editorial board. I believe your energy will establish the Journal as a jewel in Trinity’s repertoire of accomplishment.

So welcome! Welcome to the first edition of a tradition. Trinity College Dublin can now add the Trinity Student Medical Journal to its collection and its libraries. The students can claim dialogue for themselves and I can hope the Journal will become a cornerstone to the study of medicine. I am ready. Are you?

Aric Parnes
General Manager
