An answer to the challenge to measure tissue viability



SanaSense is a unique non-contact measurement system providing accurate information on the degree of tissue compression combining a low cost, thin and flexible off the shelf-sensor material with a novel signal detection and processing method.

What Problem Does it Solve/Advantages

Soft tissue and muscles are compressed when someone is lying or sitting down. Prolonged tissue compression is one key factor in pressure ulcer development.
Currently there is no direct method to measure tissue compression during lying or sitting down. Ultrasound and laser Doppler provides information on tissue health via a dynamic tissue image, but is not suitable for long term monitoring.
While comparable in its working principle to ultrasound, SanaSense offers major advantages in monitoring of advancing tissue compression. It is:

  • Suitable for home use
  • Suitable for non-contact monitoring
  • Enables an assessment of tissue health
  • Provides means of predicting and identifying dangerous levels of tissue compression

Commercial Applications

Technology Status

The signal used is associated with the ejection of blood into the great vessels. The change in signal as it travels through the tissue is quantified by a patented method. It provides information about tissue compression levels and offers quantification of absolute force values associated with different compression levels. The method is available for a standalone product or can be used to complement existing systems, (e.g pressure sensing mats, pressure relief mattresses). Sensors can be directly integrated during the foaming process
