Trinity Physicist Finds New Way to Pack Spheres Efficiently
New collaborative research has revealed the most efficient method to date for packing spherical objects into a cylinder. Dr Ho-Kei Chan, a Research Fellow from the Foams and Complex Systems research group at Trinity’s School of Physics, has developed an algorithm for sphere packing which finds an arrangement in which the spheres fit as densely as possible into the cylinder provided, an issue that has a broad range of applications. Neurobiology Teaching Programme Strengthens Links with Indian Institution
Twenty-five students from all over India recently took part in a special teaching programme involving faculty from India, the USA and Ireland. Trinity College Dublin’s Professor of Experimental Brain Research, Shane O’Mara taught at the Department of Science and Technology sponsored school in the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory which took place recently at the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuroscience, NIMHANS, in Bangalore. The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Announces Public Scholarships
The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation is offering six scholarships to Irish third level students for the academic year 2012/2013. One scholarship is offered for study at Bachelor, Master’s and specialist programmes and one scholarship is offered on post-graduate programmes (internship, clinical studies) and doctoral programmes. New Partnership Agreements to Foster Indian-Ireland Academic Links in Civil Engineering
As part of the Ireland-Indian Initiative in Civil Engineering (I3CE@TCD) Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, recently established new partnerships with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi and Thapar University, Patiala. The Memorandums of Understanding will enable the Indian institutions cooperate with Trinity College Dublin in teaching and research, provide postgraduate training and education in Civil Engineering, and promote student and staff exchange. Trinity Students to Carry the Olympic Flame for the London 2012 Olympics
Trinity College Dublin students will be carrying the Olympic Flame on June 6th next through the streets of Dublin as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. Trinity Students Celebrate the Colourful Festival of Holi
Students at Trinity College Dublin marked the spring festival of Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, with a celebration in Front Square yesterday that saw students throw coloured powder at each other. Organised by Trinity's Indian Society, the Trinity celebrations for the Holi festival aimed to embrace and promote multiculturalism within the College and Ireland. Dublin Ranked in Top Ten Best Student Cities in the World
Dublin has been named one of the best student cities in the world by the first global rankings of student cities published recently by QS. Only cities with populations of more than 250,000 and home to two or more ranked universities were analysed by researchers who took into consideration quality of living, affordability and reputation of the university amongst other indicators. Trinity Researchers Launch New Smartphone Application for Viewing Images of the Sun
Researchers from Trinity's School of Physics and School of Computer Science and Statistics celebrated the launch of a new Smartphone version of SolarMonitor.org, that allows you to view the most recent NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) images of the Sun from your Smartphone. The group, led by Trinity solar physicist, Dr Peter Gallagher, launched the application at the annual European Space Weather Week conference in Belgium recently. Read More...
