Science Without Borders

The successful Science Without Borders Scholarship programme has enabled over 3,250 funded Brazilian undergraduate students to study in Irish higher education institutions. Trinity welcomed a total of 272 students over the three year programme period, many of whom stayed on in Trinity for Summer research internships.

Ground-breaking Research Collaborations

University of Sao Paulo, Brazil

Trinity has multiple collaborations with the University of Sao Paulo (USP), which is Trinity’s most significant partner in Brazil. Trinity is the Coordinator of the SPECTRESS project (Social Practice, Cultural Trauma and Re-establishing Solid Sovereignties) which enables the mobility of staff and students studying how national identities are disrupted by the traumas of history. Trinity and USP are also members of an international design network called SUGAR. The project involves a multidisciplinary team of 7 Masters students (4 at Trinity and 3 at USP) led by Trinity Professors Kevin Kelly and Prof Eduardo Zancul. The project team will jointly take part in an industry-linked showcase event in Stanford in June 2016. USP leads on a Brazilian “English Without Borders” project, which Trinity’s Centre for English Language Teaching has become involved in through exchange of post-docs, part funded by the Global Relations Office.

Horizon 2020 FUTEBOL Project

Trinity, via CONNECT and Prof Luiz Da Silva, is leading an EU-Brazil telecommunications research team, with €3 million in funding co-managed by the Brazilian government and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The FUTEBOL (Federated Union of Telecommunications Research Facilities for an EU-Brazil Open Laboratory) Consortium involves 13 partners, eight in Brazil and five in the EU, and is a mix of academic institutions, research centres and industry, including Intel.

Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) PhD Exchange

Trinity collaborates in a PhD Exchange with Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in Pharmacy. Prof Fabio Boylan, a Brazilian academic lecturing in Trinity has long-standing collaboration with UFRJ and has received visiting postgraduate students from Rio de Janeiro. Scholarships

The Brazilian Association for Irish Studies ABEI-Haddad fellowship for Trinity is a €35,000 scholarship sponsored by the Haddad family and coordinated by W.B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies at the University of Sao Paulo for a Brazilian students to complete one of the following masters at Trinity:

  • M.Phil. Early Modern History
  • M.F.A. Playwriting
  • M. Phil in Literary Translation
  • M. Phil in Irish Writing

The scholarship is now in its second year, thanks to the generosity of the Haddad family. The first call was for 2015/16 and was awarded to Thalita Serra de Castro a USP graduate for the MPhil in Irish Writing. The deadline for applications is 2 May.
