Alumni Interview

Fionn Murtagh - Director Information, Communications and Emergent Technologies, Science Foundation Ireland

Name: Fionn Murtagh
Degree: B.A.I., M.Sc. (1976)

What are you doing with yourself these days?
I am currently doing service for the State, at Science Foundation Ireland, an agency in the Department of Enterprise. Doing research by other means, from my point of view. SFI gives research funding grants to universities.  We work very closely in this with Enterprise Ireland and with IDA colleagues.

Why did you choose your current career?
I was very much drawn to mathematics and, resulting from that, engineering. I would put this down to teachers at primary and secondary level, and parents at home, who gave me a life-long love of learning and of scholarly accomplishment.  Their dedication and work that was sometimes way beyond the call of duty – that’s what did it.

How do you like to spend your free time?
Lectures, talks, debates – that sort of activity. I am active in the RDS, the Royal Irish Academy and the Royal Society of Arts. Also in Engineers Ireland and An Roth, the Irish language section.   Otherwise – music, at performances.

What are your strongest memories of Trinity?
I remember lots of things that started off in those times and that continue to be as relevant for life as ever. Friendships and ways of thinking. The latter is related to the formal side; – course content, which in general aspects remains hugely relevant. I am thinking there of the close dovetailing of academic scholarship and social and business relevance. Apart from the formal side, there was a great deal of political activity in those days. There was a lot of learning in that too. I was elected as class representative to the Students’ Union at one point. At the time, I remember it as a high point!

Are you still in touch with other alumni?
Yes, very much so, and this past summer we had our Anniversary Reunion Dinner of the B.A., B.A.I. class of ’76. For most of the class, it was great to catch up again after so long. Oh, I took the question to mean my class mates. I should mention that Gladys O ‘Flanagan, who did English, History and Classical Studies, and I met up in those years and married later. I am pretty certain that started in the Buttery.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
The present time actually has a lot in common with when I first graduated as B.A., B.A.I., the 1970s and then into the 1980s were very tough economic times. But those times were really inspiring times too. So what of five years from now? – having vision and new sense of purpose, in Ireland and in Europe, against the global backdrop. And I want to contribute to that in every way I can.

Have you any advice for students or fellow alumni?
Starting off with Mathematics and Engineering – you can’t go wrong. That is me looking back. More generally though, irrespective of area of study and of later work, the institution of university is a great one. So I would say – just go for it, follow your aspirations always.
