Chinese Alumni - Branch Update

An event was held in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in TCD on 21 January to celebrate the branches 1st Anniversary and the Chinese New Year. Over 80 guests and friends joined with TCD Chinese Alumni members and Alumni Committee staff to enjoy the superb evening of food, drinks and entertainment & share the great memories of 2010. A big raffle in aid of TCD Chinese Alumni was held during the evening; 130 raffle tickets were sold out in an hour and prizes worth €300 were awarded.

Throughout the past year, TCD Chinese Alumni has forged a national reputation in Ireland. I, representing TCD Chinese Alumni Committee, would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation for the continuous and generous support from everyone-we are deeply grateful! I look forward to keeping you up to date with our future developments and continued success in the year ahead! Tao Zhang, Chairperson of TCD Chinese Alumni.

Wicklow/South Dublin - Branch Update
2010 started off with a sold out musical evening, wine tasting and fork supper which was so enjoyable that we are going to repeat the event in 2011. Then we had large attendance at our Spring Lunch where Senator David Norris challenged, entertained and amused us in June. We visited Kilruddery House and Gardens in Bray and had a fun Car Treasure Hunt followed by a meal in September. In October, one of our members gave an illustrated talk about an expedition he made to the remote Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, which was enjoyed by a good attendance.  A noteworthy happening was that we were given a bequest of €1000 by a deceased founding member Fred O’Connell. Following consultation with his widow it was decided to top up the bequest with surplus funds from the Branch and give the money to the Trinity Library for their rare book collection.

There have been changes to our committee: Brian Cox completed his term as President and has been replaced by Neville Whisker who had been Treasurer; Eamonn Darcy is staying on as Secretary and the position of Treasurer is being taken by Rev. Niall Sloane. We are advanced in our planning for 2011. As mentioned earlier, there will be another Musical Evening. This will be followed by a Spring Lunch, and after that a visit to the Tutankhamun Exhibition. We are also in a position to organise a Garden Party in the summer in aid of the Trinity Access Fund and a Student Book Grant. Later, in the autumn, we will have an evening of work by Irish Poets and the year will finish as usual with our AGM. We are going to assess if there is interest among our members for a formal dinner with surprises, and if there is, the function will be organised for the autumn. We are very interested in having more alumni as members and anybody who may be interested in joining can contact our Secretary, Dr. Eamonn Darcy.

Boston - Branch Update
On 27 January Professor Ian Robertson delivered a lecture on "The aging brain: challenge and opportunity". The lecture was delivered under the auspices of the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at M.I.T. Ian attracted a significant number of Trinity graduates in the Greater Boston area of all ages and backgrounds, as well as a number of Harvard and M.I.T. neuroscientists. Ian's lecture, which skilfully balanced material aimed both at non-specialists as well as professional researchers, was enthusiastically received by all present.

Spain - Branch Updates
On Thursday, 20 January, Spanish-Irish Business Network members in three cities (Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao) got together with fellow graduates of Irish universities including Trinity. Alumni Interview

David O'Donnell LL.B. (1988)

Course Name: Law
Year of Graduation: 1988

What are you doing with yourself these days?
I am Head of the Corporate Department at Mason Hayes+Curran, one of Ireland’s leading business law firms.  My work is mainly focused on Mergers and Acquisitions and Private Equity investment although I also spend a lot of time with early stage and developing organisations.  It is fascinating to work with growing companies.

Why did you choose your current career?
It was in the blood as I followed in my grandfather’s and father’s footsteps.

How do you like to spend your free time?
Family and sport of all sorts including touch rugby (used to play the real thing), running, golf.

What are your strongest memories of Trinity?
A thoroughly enjoyable experience where I had great fun learning about the law and getting involved in many aspects of college life from debating to rugby to meeting lots of new people.  I lived in Botany Bay in my last year which was truly memorable.

Are you still in touch with other alumni?
Yes, I bump into them every day through business, socially and sport.

I am also connected to new graduates as this year I am deeply honoured to be President of the Trinity Business Alumni. I feel very strongly that Trinity graduates have a role to play in ensuring the future success of Ireland Inc. The TBA provides a forum for graduates with a common interest in business to come together to learn, network and contribute to the development of the Irish economy. I would encourage all graduates of Trinity who work in business to join this complimentary community of like-minded graduates.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Enjoying life and being healthy.  In general I am very optimistic about the future for Ireland.  Through the work we do for our international clients at Mason Hayes+Curran we can see great opportunities. Celebrating Ireland winning the rugby world cup in 2015 would be another great achievement.

Obituaries

David Stewart Jenkinson B.A., B.SC., PH.D., F.R.S. (1950)
David Stewart Jenkinson graduated from the School of Chemistry in 1950 a couple of years ahead of me. He worked under Professor Wesley Cocker on a project involving meticulous handling of small quantities of materials. I was a couple of years behind him and as a beginner in research, I benefited enormously from his help and advice. As a student, he was a prominent member of the left-wing College Fabian Society. On obtaining his PhD, he went to Rothamsted Field Station, and began studying soil chemistry. He became an expert in this field, and this was recognized by his election to the Royal Society. He was the only graduate of the Chemistry Department to receive this honour. Written by: Brian McMurry M.A., Ph.D., Sc.D., Fellow Emeritus, M.R.I.A. (1953)
