Congratulations to the 2010 Alumni Awardees: Dr Patrick Brennan, Lady Harriett Bridgeman, Dr Martin McAleese and Dr Michael Pierce. We look forward to honouring them in November.

Finally, we would like to express our condolences to family, friends and colleagues of former Provost, Dr Bill Watts, who died last week, he will be sadly missed by many staff and alumni of Trinity.

Our sympathies also go out to the family and friends of Gerry Ryan, RTE broadcaster and Trinity Law alumnus, who died so suddenly last week.

Alumni Interviews

Grainne Dooley B.A. (1991) Laoise Dunphy M.Phil (2009)

Grainne Dooley B.A. (1991)

Education: B.A. Business & Economics, TCD (1991), M.A. M.Sc Economics, LSE (2000)

What are you doing with yourself these days?
I’m currently a Bond Portfolio Manager.

Why did you choose your current career?
I have always enjoyed finance and economics and this job allows me to pursue those interests.

How do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy sports, the arts in general and spending time with family and friends.

What are your strongest memories of Trinity?
Coffee on the chocolate boxes in the Arts Block, the Luce sports hall, the wonder of walking into a relative oasis of calm in the city centre…and many more.

Are you still in touch with other alumni?
Yes, four of my sisters also went to Trinity, so we have a reasonably extensive network!

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Always a tough question but would probably like to be working in a more public policy oriented role within finance.

Laoise Dunphy M.Phil (2009)

Education: B.A. History & Politics, UCD, M.Phil Literatures of the Americas, TCD (2009)
Beginning MBBS (GEP) in St. George’s Medical School in August 2010

What are you doing with yourself these days?
I am living in London with 3 friends from TCD (and 4 more in a house down the road!). I am working in recruitment in Oxford Circus and enjoy the high paced life-style that comes along with it, though could do with a few more hours sleep.

Why did you choose your current career?
I actually came into the agency I work in looking for temporary work whilst travelling and they offered me a place as a consultant. Though I enjoy it very much I have decided to go back and study Medicine and was recently offered a place in St.
George’s Medical School in South London.

How do you like to spend your free time?
I spend much of my free time with my friends (many of whom I met at TCD or through sailing clubs and teams whilst in Dublin). I love to take advantage of all that London has to offer and am addicted to Time Out Magazine! At the moment a huge portion of my spare time is spent organising the TCD Ball London which will be on the 22nd of May at the Landmark Hotel (should anyone be interested).

What are your strongest memories of Trinity?
My favourite memories of Trinity are of the long days spent lounging outside the Pav in the sunshine. These are my main memories and they always seem to involve the sun, but I do wonder how, as there never seems to be much sun in Dublin.

I also enjoyed the intellectual conversation over pints at Grogan’s with the fantastic lecturers and staff of the English Department.

Are you still in touch with other alumni?
I live with Norah Ferris, Kerrie McGinn and Lorna Pierse. We are still very close, and live very close, to a lot of other alumni.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Hopefully I will be graduating with honours from my 3rd degree (graduate entry medicine) and have a fantastic placement in a prestigious hospital. But whatever happens I hope to be happy and still surrounded by fantastic friends and family. (Not to be too cheesy!)

Obituaries

William Arthur Watts, Former Provost Trinity College Dublin (1981-1991)

Bill was a Dubliner, born into a working class Protestant family who lived on a street off the North Wall. He spent many of his early years in Athy, where the family moved when his father’s work took him there. He moved back to Dublin to attend St Andrew’s College, then in Clyde Road where he was a year ahead of me. He was not known as Bill Watts then, but Willie Watts. He became known as Bill in College. St Andrew’s then was quite a tough school, but it had academic strengths in Modern Languages and Science. In 1948 Bill obtained a Sizarship in Modern Languages in this College, and proceeded to the Honor course in that area, reading French and German. On a personal note, I followed him the following year taking the Sizarship examination in Experimental Science. On the day that the results were pinned up outside the Assistant Registrar’s Office in East Chapel, I was at the back of a crowd of students anxious to see the results. With skills well honed on the rugby pitch, Bill squeezed his way through the scrum, and was the first to tell me I had got it. Indeed one of the memories of my undergraduate days was watching a First XV match in College Park and seeing a very muddy Bill in the line out. He was very much a hands-on forward. I would not have liked to be on the opposite team.

As an undergraduate, he was a member of the College Fabian Society. The membership was divided between Socialists and Communists – remember this was the 1950’s – with the latter having the more members. One year, Bill organised a coup at its AGM and brought in enough new members to seize control of the club for the Socialists. Of course, this lasted for a year but it did not last. Needless to say, there was a counter-coup the next year.

Bill had always been interested in field Biology, and in the Junior Sophister year of his Mod Lang course, he persuaded the appropriate authorities that he could enter the Senior Freshman year in Natural Science, reading Botany, Geology, and Zoology. He always said that he would have had difficulties if he had been asked to enter the Junior Freshman year, as this would have involved Chemistry and Physics. He took this SF course in addition to the Mod Lang course and ultimately obtained 1st Class Moderatorships in Mod Lang (1952) and Natural Sciences (1953), in the latter specialising in Botany.

On graduating, he moved to Hull as a Junior Lecturer in Botany. In his book, A Memoir, he admits that this was a mistake. But one happy event happened there. By coincidence, Gerry had taken up a teaching position there too. He had known her in College, the romance continued to flourish and they married in 1954. Faced with the certainty that he would be called up for military service in Britain, he resigned and they came back to Dublin in 1955. He initially got a post as assistant to Frank Mitchell, but a vacancy soon came up in Botany –the incumbent had got Bill’s old job in Hull – and Bill came in as an Assistant Lecturer. One of the consequences of these various moves was that Bill did not start to work for a PhD. He never did. At the time it had not become a sine qua non in order to obtain an academic post. After all, one of his mentors was Mr Frank Mitchell. He settled down to teach, and to carry out research. Papers flowed, and Fellowship arrived in 1960. He only became a Doctor when he submitted his papers for the degree of ScD. This occurred during my watch as Dean of Graduate Studies. Frank Mitchell produced two names of people of sufficient standing in Bill’s field and who had not worked with him – a difficult task in the specialised field. The reports were very complementary and the degree awarded in 1973.

I have another memory to share with you. It takes us back to the early 1960s and it is of good dinners prepared by Gerry in the flat in Upper Glenageary Road. Bill would outline things that needed to be changed in College, and what he would do if he were involved in the changes. An academic administrator in waiting!

Eda Sagarra has outlined and praised his role as Dean, Senior Lecturer, and Provost. I do not want to add to or repeat all that has been said. But I would like to make a few points. He had vision, but he was a pragmatist. If he lost a particular argument, and this was rare, he shrugged his shoulders and got on with it. He bore no grudges. He attracted and held immense loyalty from those who served with and under him.

After he retired, he not only continued his research. He was a stamp collector and kept it up.  He continued to take an interest in the affairs and management of this College that he loved. Only once could he be deemed to have expressed an opinion publicly, when he attended to vote at a meeting of the University Senate to elect a new Pro- Chancellor, an issue on which he held strong views. His last appearance in College was to attend the Scholars Dinner earlier this month. He was a Scholar of the Decade having been elected in 1950 - 60 years ago. Incidentally when he was a Senior Freshman, rare in those days when most Scholars were elected in their Junior Sophister year. He spoke movingly at the dinner about his days both as a student, a Scholar  and as a Provost, and he got a long ovation. The College has lost a very good servant, I have lost an old friend, but for Gerry and the family their loss is so much greater. They will be very much in our thoughts.

Brian McMurry, M.A., Ph.D., Sc.D., Fellow Emeritus, M.R.I.A., (1953)
