TCD Young Alumni London

On Saturday 16 May the Trinity College Dublin Young Alumni hosted a black-tie evening for nearly 200 TCD  graduates at the prestigious Landmark Hotel in Marylebone in central London. Beginning with a champagne reception in the hotel's gazebo, the guests sat down to dinner in the Grand Ballroom.  Live music and dancing continued until the early on Sunday morning.   For over thirty years, alumni in London have run their own version of the Trinity Ball, to bring together some of the 20,000 TCD graduates living and working in London and around London. Young Alumni Committee chairman Kevin Keane introduced guest speaker Dr. John Fingleton. John began his academic career at Trinity, earning his B.A. in economics with a gold medal before doing a doctorate at Oxford. He returned to lecture at Trinity from 1990-2000 and also taught at the University of Chicago and London School of  Economics.   He was appointed to lead the Competition Authority in Dublin in 2000. John was appointed to head the UK’s competition watchdog, the Office of Fair Trading, in 2005, where he has continued to champion the consumer in work in the supermarkets and banking sectors and aviation. John described his experience of coming to Trinity in the mid-eighties, only the second person from his Christian Brother’s school in Portlaoise to have done so, as being like moving from an alleyway to a wide boulevard, with him flourishing under Trinity’s open and pluralist values. John urged the audience to hold on to their relationship with Ireland and the values that they had taken from there, particularly their links with Trinity through organisations such as the Young Alumni.

Interviews

Robert T Doyle, B.A. (1998)

What are you doing with yourself these days?

After Graduating from Trinity in 1998 with a PhD In Chemistry, I spent one year at the Australian National University and then 2.5 years at Yale University here in the US. I moved to New York in 2005 and am currently an associate professor of chemistry and Biology at Syracuse University. I run a research group of 21 people, a mix of undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral associates. My group performs research into oral insulin and new vaccines for meningitis, tetanus and rotavirus. We also focus heavily on targeted delivery of drugs and imaging agents to cancer cells, particularly ovarian. Our research into oral insulin and the meningitis vacinne work has been written/discussed on NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, NPR, National Review of Medicine, New Scientist Magazine etc.

Why did you choose your current career?

I always like chemistry and biology, from my time at St. Declan’s CBS in Cabra, Dublin. It was natural to go to Trinity to pursue that and it was there that I got involved in the research of Dr. Paul Kruger in the Chemistry Department at TCD. He allowed me to join his group and from there it was an upward progression.

How do you like to spend your free time?

My wife, Niamh and I spend a lot of time with our Dog, Henry and going to the movies. We are also huge Boston Red Sox fans and go to as many games as we can. We also have a great group of friends here in New York. We try to travel a lot. In our ~ 10 years together we’ve been everywhere from Las Vegas, Sydney and Malawi to Fiji, Cancun and Hawaii.

What are your strongest memories of Trinity?

I have two that immediately spring to mind, the first is the memory of the friends I made. Trinity really brings together some great people and we were a collection that ranged from rich to poor from North to South (Dublin and Ireland!), Irish and international. They made that long chemistry classes a little more bearable. The second is going to Trinity Ball. I really want to come home and go to one again some day.

Are you still in touch with other alumni?

Yes, all the time. It was the head of the New York based Alumni, Ron Ferguson who arranged this interview! Also I have friends from Trinity that still work at Trinity (Hello Thorri!) and also at Intel, Bristol-Myers and in Companies in Australia, Canada the UK etc.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

Hopefully still doing what I’m doing. I just made tenure here in 3 years (norm is 6-10), and so I’m still very young to be where I am. Having spent 15 years since secondary school getting to this point I’m not in a hurry to move.
