Research Expertise

Description

I am research active and have made a significant contribution to the body of knowledge, reflecting an interdisciplinary scope. I have published books on public service interpreting, cultural diversity, francophone studies and critical discourse analysis, self-directed learning, as well as co-editing journal special issues, authoring journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, book reviews and reflections. From communication and Francophone studies to applied linguistics, I have also extended my research interests into pedagogic developments, focusing on self-directed learning, experiential learning, learner engagement, active blended-learning, flipped learning, competency-based learning, inclusive learning and curriculum developments. One of the key criteria for the promotion to Reader (Professor in) was the ability to use the evidence-based practice to engage learners and have a significant impact on attainment and achievement. In a letter confirming my promotion to Readership, the Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett wrote on 1 September 2018, "your referees commended 'a sustained record of excellence in teaching and [...] exceptional innovative and significant contributions to linking research with teaching practice'". I am an active member of professional bodies, including research groups, committees, associations, international peer review teams and editorial boards of international academic journals. I have held visiting professorships and have been involved in different successful joint research project bids seeking funding from national and international public bodies and private agencies. As Director of Research for 5 years, I have prepared and implemented an ambitious research and enterprise strategy, seeking measurable targets with a positive impact on learning and teaching. Key aims of the strategy were to build a critical mass through research mentorships, to enhance our collaborative practice by setting up strategic relations and partnerships with other higher education institutions and professional industries.
