EVENING PROGRAMME 2016-2017
INTRODUCTION TO LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN MEDIEVAL FRANCE
There were two linguistic domains in Medieval France and two ways of saying yes: Oc and Oïl. This evening course will look at both Old French and Old Occitan and some of the main literary works of the period. The texts discussed will range from the beginnings of love poetry, the Bretons lais through to chivalric romances.

Structure:

  • Each class will be 1 hour long and will consist of a presentation followed by a discussion of a specific text
  • Participants will have the opportunity to prepare a short presentation or translation

Objectives:

  • By the end of the course, participants will be able to read a text or passage in old French and/or old Occitan with the help of a translation or glossary

The course is aimed at anyone interested in:

  • the medieval period
  • languages and their development
  • the development of poetry
  • French medieval literature

NB. No previous knowledge of Old French or Old Occitan is required

Copies of the texts and material will be supplied.

Thursday 16.02.17: Flamenca and the old Occitan Romance
Thursday 23.02.17: Marie de France and the Lais Bretons
Thursday 9.03.17: Chrétien de Troyesand The Knight of the Cart
Thursday 16.03.17: Oïl Poetry: Adam de la Halle, Othon de Grandson and François Villon

TIME: 7.30 p.m.-8.30 p.m. VENUE: The Swift Theatre
