The main Irish legislation dealing with Data Protection is the Data Protection Act 2018

The previous 1988 Act amended by the Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2003 will still apply in some areas.

The General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 came into force on 25th May 2018.

The 2011 “e-Privacy Regulations” (S.I. No. 336 of 2011 – the European Communities (Electronic Communications Networks And Services) (Privacy And Electronic Communications) Regulations 2011) will also apply to the processing of personal data in relation to cookies and direct marketing.

The Health Research Regulations 2018 S.I. No. 314 of 2018 set out the legal basis for the processing of personal data for the purposes of health research.
