Research Description:

The research conducted by my group investigates the mechanisms which control inflammation, with the aim of identifying new avenues for treating autoimmune and inflammatory disease conditions in humans. We take a translational research approach, using both preclinical models and patient samples, to investigate novel mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. Our primary goal is to identify novel targets for therapeutic intervention for patients suffering from these diseases. My laboratories are located at Trinity Translational Medicine Institute and the National Children’s Research Centre at Children’s Health Ireland, Crumlin allowing close collaboration with clinician scientists to facilitate these studies. We also collaborate closely with colleagues in the pharmaceutical industry to advance ongoing drug development programmes.

Current areas of focus include uncovering the role of novel Interleukin-1 family members in inflammation and autoimmune disease. Recent findings in this area include the following (Life Sci. Alliance 2020 3(4), Nature Commun. 2019 10(1):4003, Mucosal Immunol. 2016, 9(5):1193. 2022, 15(3):491-503. J. Immunol. 2013 ,191(6):3337. 2022, 207(2):651-660) .
