Biography:

Dr Dania Movia received her PhD at Trinity College Dublin in 2012, and subsequently she was awarded a Special Purpose Certificate in Academic Practice by the same university in 2018. Since 2022, she is an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Radiation Therapy of Trinity College Dublin. Dr Movia champions the reduction/replacement of animal testing via research and training of young scientists and has established the first wet-lab on animal-free, lung cancer research of Trinity College Dublin (Ireland). Her current research work focuses on developing and implementing new, non-animal methodologies (NAMs) that may be used as an alternative to animal testing when studying the safety and efficacy of lung cancer therapies. She is internationally recognised for her high-quality scientific contributions, earning invitations to present at international meetings, and to review project proposals for several, distinguished funding agencies. She has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, edited 1 book for the series “Methods in Molecular Biology” (published by Springer Nature), and she has acted as Guest Editor in “Animals” (MDPI) and “Front. Bioeng. Biotechnol.” (Frontiers) journals. She has generated external research income in excess of €2M, from national, European and international (UK and USA) agencies, including Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), the European Commission, and the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing. Dr Movia is a member of several professional bodies and organisations, which include the Irish Lung Cancer Alliance (ILCA), Cancer Trials Ireland, the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), and the scientific advisory panels of Animal-Free Research UK and FRAME-UK.
