Migrant Careers and Aspirations

In 2007 much of the debate on immigration in Ireland was based on the assumption that contemporary immigrants would be staying in the country. There was in fact much evidence that was not necessarily the case.  The Migrant Careers and Aspirations project therefore aimed to study immigration and the labour market dynamically, mapping changes (or lack of them) at the individual level over time, from the perspectives of both migrants and employers.  As well as casting light on immigrants' changing careers and aspirations, the study aimed to explore employers’ strategies in the workplace.  By focusing on the experience of work it raised questions about the integration of migrant workers into the Irish economy and wider society. From the start the project involved interaction with migrants’ organisations, trade unions and employers; it had a ‘user group’ which met twice a year during the duration of the project; as well as academic publications it produced a series of reports and newsletters (see publications).

The Migrant Careers and Aspirations project was located within the Employment Research Centre.
