Alumni to Student Mentoring Events
Posted on 10 October 2017
There was a new series of alumni to student mentoring events that kicked off this October. These events built on the success of previous School based GradLink programmes. It was an opportunity where alumni connected with current Trinity students who were interested in the mentor’s areas of expertise. Each session focused on a different area of interest, from Health Sciences, Business and Creative Arts to Engineering and Science. The events provided exposure to a broad range of career options for the students. Moreover, it was an opportunity for them to network with potential alumni mentors working in specific sectors and who are open to sharing their experiences and expertise. After attending the initial ‘meet a mentor’ event students connected (via email, Skype and in person) with their mentors to further their mentoring relationships.
These events highlight the benefits of mentoring which is an interactive learning and educational experience for both parties involved. The specific shapes of these relationships are unique to each mentor and mentee. For the mentee it is was a great way to boost their career prospects by getting guidance and support from an experienced graduate of Trinity. The mentors helped students prepare for the world of work, discussed career options, offered practical assistance for the attainment of jobs and places on postgraduate courses, reviewed CV’s/ LinkedIn profile’s and practiced interview strategies, professional communication and networking. The students benefited enormously from this exchange of ideas with mentors and gained useful insights. It was a rewarding experience that resulted in personal growth for both the mentor and the mentee.
