Date: Wednesday, 30th May 2007
Time: 5.15pm
Topic: 'An Economic Perspective on Informal Caregiving'

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Schneider, Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Institute for Social Policy and Research Institute for the Economics of Ageing

Location: Room 2041A (Swift Lecture Theatre) on the ground floor in the Arts Building in Trinity College

Outline: Economists have raised a variety of questions with regard to the informal provision of care to kith and kin. A first strand of literature sets out to explain why rational individuals would sacrifice leisure and employment and career perspectives to take on an unpaid care responsibility. A second strand of literature – which will form the core part of the presentation – focuses on the economic value and on the economic effects of informal caregiving. A variety of studies use replacement costing, opportunity cost approaches or contingent valuation to arrive at a monetary valuation of time spent on informal care and to account for the cost incurred by caregivers and employers due to reallocating resources to long-term care. Against the backdrop of these studies, several points can be made for an expansion of public support to informal carers.
