Guest Speaker Seminar

Date: Thursday, 2nd October 2008
Time: 4.00pm
Topic: 'Innovative Approaches for Older Men's Community Engagement'

Speaker: Mr. Anthony Brown, Project Officer, Men's Health Information and Resource, School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, University of Western Sydney, Australia

Location: Social Policy and Ageing Research Centre, Seminar Room, 3rd floor, 3 College Green

Outline: In Australia, many aged care service providers report difficulties in successfully engaging older men.  Men themselves report that aged care services are feminised environments that do not meet their emotional and social needs.  Many services are beginning to recognise this challenge and are adopting innovative approaches in working with men.

In recent years community men’s sheds have been developed in response to the unmet social needs of retired men.  These and other men’s organisations offer valuable lessons around successfully engaging older, frail aged men in service delivery.  This presentation will present a summary of successful approaches in working with older men, together with a brief review of academic and professional literature around the topic.

The talk will be illustrated with real-life examples of programs that are currently working with men.
