Speaker Biographies

Catherine Morris

Catherine Morris is the Cultural Coordinator at Trinity College Dublin and the National Library of Ireland. Her role involves forging links between the University and culture and the arts across the city. This joint appointment is part of Trinity's pioneering initiative in the Creative Arts, Technologies and Culture (CATC). She recently curated the 'Alice Milligan and the Irish Cultural Revival' exhibition that ran at the National Library. Her monograph about Milligan and the Cultural Revival will be published by Four Courts Press later this year. She has taught literature in several universities and worked as a research editor on the Yeats Letters in Oxford University.

Fiona Ross

Fiona Ross has been Director of the National Library of Ireland since March 2010. Under her leadership the NLI is undertaking a significant transformation with the aim of creating a 21st century digital library that can reach anyone with an interest in Ireland.

rossMs. Ross sits on the committees of the Council of National Cultural Institutions, Irish Ancestry Research Centre, Dublin UNESCO City of Literature, Association of Chief Executives of State Agencies, Consortium of National & University Libraries and the Committee on Library Co-operation in Ireland. She is also a member of the Irish Manuscripts Commission and an ex officio trustee of the Chester Beatty Library.

In 2008, she was awarded a Law Masters in Governance and Public Policy (first class honours with distinction) from Queen's University Belfast. She has undertaken academic research in the area of governance and reputation. An expert in the field of leadership and governance, Ms Ross has lectured in University College Dublin and at the Irish Management Institute (IMI). Ms Ross also worked in the area of corporate governance, reputation and ethics. Prior to her lecturing position in UCD, Ms Ross spent over 20 years in senior finance, marketing and communications roles in Ireland, UK, US and Asia.

John Tierney

tierneyJohn Tierney has been the Dublin City Manager since September 2006 – he was previously City Manager in Galway City and County Manager in Fingal.

John holds a BA and an MA in Public Management from the Institute of Public Administration and a Doctorate in Governance from Queens University Belfast.

John is Chairman of the Steering Group, which monitors the Strategic Planning Guidelines for the Greater Dublin Area. He is also Chairman of the Institute of Public Administration and the Creative Dublin Alliance. He is a Director of Dublin Tourism and the Digital Hub Development Agency. He is a member of the Council of Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the Governance Board of the Long Room Hub in Trinity College Dublin. He is also a member of the National Directorate on Fire and Emergency Management and the National Transport Authority.
