Religions and their Cultures
Part 1: Gods and religions of the
ancient Mediterranean
This course investigates the gods, myths and
worship of those religions of the ancient
Mediterranean which are too often inaccurately
described as ‘paganism’. Studying texts and
archaeological findings from Egypt to the
ancient Near East and from ancient Greece to
Rome, students will acquire a deeper insight into
the devotional practices and the understanding
of religion and cult of men and women who built
the pyramids, wrote the Iliad and conquered
some of the greatest empires of human history.
