Trinity Developing Guidelines on International Volunteering

March 2013

On March 1st, a consultation event was hosted by Trinity Civic Engagement in the Long Room Hub to reflect on how to approach international volunteering within the College in light of concerns in the development sector around “voluntourism”, “neo colonialism” and the myriad of cultural, environmental, economic and social issues associated with development volunteering.

Comhlámh, the association for returned development workers presented on responsive and responsible volunteering based on decades of experience in developing good practice in this area while Professor Robbie Gilligan of the School of Social Work challenged participants to consider the ethical challenges.

The event concluded with discussions about organisational structures, safety standards, meeting host community and minimal length of stay.

A working group will now convene to develop a set of College Guidelines on International Volunteering. If you are interested in feeding into this experience based on relevant academic expertise or personal experience, please contact Special Thanks to the Trinity International Development Initative for supporting this event.
