Homeless Service Outreach

2 February 2011

The plan is to meet at front arch in advance at 1.45 and head around to the Lighthouse together. We have two main tasks:

Firstly, we will be unpacking and sorting donated clothes into sizes and shelves and separating any items that are torn, stained or that the homeless people who use the service wouldn't wear. Good quality items that wouldn't be worn by this group will be bagged and sent on to another charity who will have a use for them. Gloves will be provided for anyone taking this task and as it may be a little dusty, it is suggested that anyone who has asthma does not undertake this task.

We will also to prepare sandwiches for the people who will be coming in that evening.

The Lighthouse is open three evenings per week including Tuersday and homeless people come to say a prayer, get a bite to eat, have a chat and pick up suitable items of clothing and toiletries. The Lighthouse is run by Dublin Christian Mission who are a non-denominational social action group. More information on the Lighthouse and the work of DCM is available here: http://www.dcmlive.ie/light_house.html.

We'll have a cup of tea and some biscuits at some point to break the shift up a bit. It should be a good opportunity to meet some people from around College and also become familiar with an organisation who are doing worthy community work on our doorstep. Feel free to pass this on to colleagues and friends. 2011 is the European Year of Volunteering and what better way to mark it than by giving a little time to help a good cause?
