Volunteer Fair 2012

The annual Volunteer Fair took place on November 22nd as part of College’s ongoing commitment to support and encourage members of College staff and students to volunteer in the local, national and international community (Action 5.2 of the College Strategic Plan 2009-2014). Representatives from 35 different organisations were on hand to discuss a variety of opportunities to get involved. You can check out the opportunities showcased on our news page.

Dean of Students' Roll of Honour 2012

Over 450 Trinity College students were commended by both the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Ms. Frances Fitzgerald T.D. and the Provost at the Dean of Students’ Roll of Honour ceremony in Trinity College on April 18th for their participation in extracurricular, voluntary activity both inside and outside the College. The Roll of Honour aims to recognise the learning outside the classroom which students gain through extra-curricular voluntary activity.

Postgraduate Week Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity

On the 22nd of March, a team of Postgraduate students helped with painting, clearing, gardening and more in the renovation of four homes in Inchicore. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with Dublin City Council, local government authorities, other non- profits and communities to build and renovate houses in Dublin to allow low income families the opportunity to buy their own home and charitable organisations to improve their facilities at a low cost. Currently Habitat is partnering with Dublin City Council to renovate four derelict homes for families in Inchicore, Dublin 8. The work done as part of Postgraduate Week contributes to enabling low-income families becoming first-time homeowners plus the community will be regenerated as the derelict properties used to be the scene of anti-social behaviour.

Volunteer Fair 2011

Big thank you to all the organisations and potential volunteers who attended the Annual Volunteer Fair on Campus which took place in the Graduate Memorial Building (GMB) from 12pm to 3pm on Thursday 20th of October. Summer opportunities abroad were showcased by EIL Intercultural Learning, Outreach Moldova and Habitat for Humanity among others. Local organisations who were seeking to recruit volunteers includes Engineers Ireland, Dublin Lesbian Line, Foróige and the Le Chéile mentoring programme for young people involved with the probation service. This fair was organised by the Civic Engagement Officer, Careers Advisory Service in conjunction with the Trinity Volunteer Opportunities Forum.

National Day of Volunteering 2011

The Annual National Day of Volunteering took place on Friday, September 30th and more than 75 students, members of staff and community members got involved in five different Trinity projects. The National Day serves to encourage people to donate their time and skills for a few hours and experience hands on involvement in the community. Volunteers worked on projects with Habitat for Humanity, Age Action, Lighthouse Homeless Ministry, the Rediscovery Centre and with our very own Voluntary Tuition Programme to mark the occasion. Dean of Students' Roll of Honour 2011

On April 7th, three hundred and eighty five students who engage in extra-curricular voluntary activity were recognised at the inaugural Dean of Students' Roll of Honour cermony in the Dining Hall. The ceremony was addressed by Dr Martin McAleese B.Dent.Sc., M.A. (1984). Dr. McAleese spoke of the importance of moving outside the comfort zone to make things happen, change things and as an opportunity to change ourselves. He talked about how instrumental volunteers are in a variety of areas- sports, advocacy, service provision, social and community and in politics and peace. We Volunteer! Exhibition of Student Volunteering

Throughout RAG Week 2011 (January 17-21), the We Volunteer! Exhibition previewed in the Orientation Space of the BLU Library. The exhibition evolved as a collaborative project between Higher Education Institutions as part of the European Year of Volunteering 2011. It aims to honour, recognise the contribution which student volunteers make on campuses and in communities in Ireland and further afield and to inspire other students to get involved. The exhibition will be officially launched by Marian Harkin MEP and Michael King, founder of Suas on January 24th in the National Library and will go on to tour campuses and conferences in Ireland, the UK and Brussels. This year, the biggest volunteer fair to date saw 35 community organisations showcase their voluntary opportunities to students and staff of Trinity College Dublin.

Building a Voice for Student Volunteering in Ireland

Building a Voice for Student Volunteering in Ireland On November 12th and 13th, more than 50 student volunteers from 16 Universities and Institutes of Technology across the island of Ireland came together to share knowledge, ideas and effective practice, to reflect on the impact, value and significance of their volunteering and to develop a mission statement for student volunteering in Ireland. The event was a collaboration between students and staff of Trinity College Dublin, NUI, Galway, Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology, University of Limerick, University of Ulster and St. Angela's College Sligo. The forum- the first of its kind in Ireland- took the approach that the experts in student volunteering are the student volunteers themselves and thus the whole weekend was participative and deliberative with the keynote address being delivered by a student volunteer.

US Scholar Dr. Patti Clayton facilitated a workshop on critical reflection utilising the internationally acclaimed DEAL model she co-developed with faculty and students. Outcomes from the event are available from event sponsors Campus Engage- network for the promotion of civic engagement activities in Irish higher education. Campus Engage is also sponsoring the forthcoming WeVolunteer! Mobile Exhibition showcasing diverse student volunteering contributions to celebrate the European Year of Volunteering 2011. Junior Chamber Dublin Active Citizenship Week 2010

On Saturday October 9th TCD Students went with JCI Dublin members to Dublin Youth Theatre to do more than just a spot of painting. Volunteers donned old clothes, costumes and resorted to inside-outing to paint the office, front door and bathroom of 23 Upper Gardiner St. Dublin Youth Theatre provides for the personal and social development of its members through participation in drama workshops and productions and works to attain a high artistic standard in the public performance of plays which include work relevant to the lives of young people today. DYT is also a former haunt of Aidan Gillan and many other famous Dublin actors.

National Day of Volunteering 2010

Friday October 1st was the annual National Day of Volunteering and to mark the occasion more than thirty students, staff and alumni of Trinity College Dublin mucked in on two gardening projects over the weekend. On Friday two teams of volunteers spent the day working side by side with seven second year students of Larkin Community College on Cathal Brugha Street to plan, hoe, weed and prepare the soil of a small plot of long overgrown greenery on the school grounds. On Saturday, a third team spent the day working on the grounds of Odin's Wood Day Care Centre for Older People in Finglas. This was the second annual visit of a team of Trinity volunteers to maintain the garden of the Centre which caters for people aged 67 to 97 by providing personal care, hairdressing, meals and social stimulation. This year, the day's gardening in Finglas also coincided with Positive Ageing Week, a festival which focuses on highlighting how Ireland can be a great place to grow old.

Dublin City Volunteer Week 2010

On Saturday 29th of May, fifteen members of staff, students and friends of Trinity College, mucked in and spent the day gardening at Echlin House, an under 18s residential service run by Crosscare Young Peoples Services which strives to provide some stability for those staying with Crosscare at a difficult time. It was a pretty "soft" morning but fortunately it dried up as the morning passed. Crosscare have asked that the Civic Engagement Office, pass on their thanks and a big "bualadh bos" (applause) to the volunteers who did wonderful job and were so enthusiastic throughout the day. This outreach activity marked the beginning Dublin City Volunteer Week 2010 which aims to celebrate and recognize the efforts of the countless volunteers in Dublin City, and show the many diverse and exciting ways people can get involved in volunteering. Particular thanks are due to the staff of Crosscare and Echlin House, JCI Dublin and Fiona Garrigan of Glorious Gardens.

RAG Week 2010 Outreach

On Friday 5th of February, more than twenty Trinity students volunteered to clear, clean and paint as part of a rejuvenation of 'The Factory' performance and film production space in Ringsend. Once finished, the original home of 'The Commitments' will provide Irish musicians and film makers with rehearsal rooms, high tech light sound and editing facilities, casting and screening rooms, indoor movie studios. It will also serve the community through education, training and employment schemes.

Give it a Swirl 2009

Give it a Swirl- the national day of volunteering- took place on Friday the 25th of September. To mark the occasion, twenty-five Trinity students agreed to pick up their paintbrushes and don their gardening gloves for local communities in Dublin city. The first project brought the students to the Lawrence Redmond Community Centre in Drimnagh, which has been vacant for over twenty years. A second team of students went to Odin's Wood Day Care Centre in Finglas where they made the most of Friday's sunshine by weeding, planting, mowing and cleaning up the Centre's garden.
