Book of Kells Animations with Irish Sign Language

March 22, 2021

The Book of Kells Exhibition is proud to launch a series of multi-user friendly children’s animations which it created with funding from the Heritage Council of Ireland. The animations were specially devised to bring new accessibility and introduce children to the Book of Kells and The Long Room in a fun and enjoyable way.

Two of the animations are designed for deaf audiences and were supported by a collaboration with the Centre for Deaf Studies at Trinity College Dublin. We had a shared goal to create high-quality content for deaf children featuring Irish Sign Language (ISL) and the end result is two animations that fully embrace the role of sign language in bringing stories to life for deaf audiences.

The Centre for Deaf Studies’ Professor Lorraine Leeson and Haaris Sheikh worked with Senan Dunne to create ISL interpretations that embody the colour, fun and adventure at the heart of the animations. Senan, who features in both animations, is one of Ireland’s eminent deaf interpreters, a graduate of Trinity, and an accredited International Sign interpreter with the World Federation of the Deaf and the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters.

We hope you enjoy meeting the monks of Iona and the colourful characters in the Very Long Room!
