Bookmarks: Lessons Learned from Getting Primary School Children to Write and Illustrate Their Own Books
Tuesday, 8 November 2022, 10 – 11:30am
A seminar by Becky Long (Trinity Access), Jane Maxwell (Library of Trinity College Dublin), and Dr Catherine Ann Cullen (Bookmarks facilitator, author, and IRC Postdoctoral Fellow) as part of the Manuscript, Book and Print Seminar Series, organised by the Manuscript, Book and Print Research Theme and the Library of Trinity College Dublin.
The seminar will focus on the rationale behind and the magic of the Trinity Access Bookmarks Programme, with particular emphasis on the importance of reading and storytelling as developmental tools for children, the role of the facilitator in the creative process and the research potential of the Bookmarks Programme books which have been donated to the Library.
Dr Catherine Ann Cullen is an IRC Postdoctoral Fellow at UCD/Poetry Ireland and author of seven books including The Song of Brigid's Cloak (Beehive Books, October 2022).
This new seminar series showcases the diversity of research conducted in Trinity related to the research theme in Manuscript, Book and Print Cultures, which among many other topics includes a focus on historical questions around the origins and development of writing systems, literatures and literary cultures, with research on issues related to textuality in society like literacy, reading and wellbeing, and policy issues around maximising access to Ireland’s written cultural heritage. Papers address engaging children in reading, the wellbeing benefits to reading in Old Age, the experience of working as a creative writer with illustrators, manuscript culture, and digitisation and the new possibilities it opens up for research in this field.
