TLRH | SCARF | ‘A Holy Show Weekly’: Southside and Soap Opera in Ireland

A talk by Morgan Wait (PhD Candidate, School of Histories and Humanities) as part of the School of Creative Arts Research Forum, in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub.

Soap Opera is an important site of study in the history of television and in the study of women and television in particular. Much has been done in the United States and United Kingdom in this area. The work of Aeng, Geraghty, Spiegel, Wheatley, and Moseley, has been instrumental in illuminating the ways in which Soap Opera operates as a genre and the ways in which women interact with it. But less has been done in Ireland. Though works from Sheehan, O’Connor, McCloone, and Gibbons took a first look at Irish soap operas such as Tolka Row and The Riordans in the 1980s, little else has been done since. And nothing at all has been written about what was perhaps Ireland’s most controversial soap, Southside. Set in Cork in the late 1960s the programme highlighted a broad array of social issues during the period. This paper draws upon press sources and internal records from RTÉ to reconstruct this programme and the discourse that revolved around it in Ireland in the late 1960s.

The School of Creative Arts Research Forum meets weekly at 10 am on Mondays during term and is led by the School's doctoral students. The aim of the Forum is to give a space for School researchers, both staff and postgraduate students, to share their ideas in a supportive environment. It is also an opportunity for the School to hear about the research of colleagues both from within TCD and outside who share our research interests. In line with the research agenda of the School, talks will encompass traditional research and practice-based research and will be followed by Q&A.
