TLRH| Sonic Spaces |Culture on the Radio

A panel discussion as part of the ‘Sonic Spaces’ series.

This event will bring together a diverse panel of researchers and practitioners to discuss their experiences of sharing culture via radio: Nerys Williams (UCD) who will discuss her research into "a poetics of listening”, focused on the production of poetry at the BBC’s Third Programme (1946-1967); Fiona Hallinan, an artist, researcher and co-founder of the Department of Ultimology at TCD – focused on the study of that which is dead or dying – who will introduce a related radio essay she co-created with Kate Strain for RTÉ’s Drama On One; and Luke Clancy, who runs the independent radio production company, SoundsDoable, as well as working extensively as a producer-presenter at RTE Radio 1 and RTE Lyric FM, where his show shows include Culture File, which aims to provide listeners with a daily dose of arts and culture and a guide to creativity in the world around us.

‘Sonic Spaces’ is organised by Jennifer O’Meara, Department of Film, as part of the Creative Arts Practice Research theme. The series considers the creative possibilities of audio and sound culture as they relate to issues of society, technology, the environment and the body. It aims to encourage the academic and broader community to reflect on our relationship to listening and its significance. ‘Sonic Spaces’ is supported by the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute.
