Chinese New Year Back to 1800s: Through the Looking Glass of The Dream of the Red Chamber

Please note change of venue. This lecture will now take place in the Salmon Lecture Theatre in the Hamilton Building.

A talk by Xun Liu (TCD) organised by the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies as part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.

Join us to discover how Chinese New Year was celebrated in the Eighteenth Century through the looking glass of the most renowned Chinese classical novel, The Dream of the Red Chamber. This masterpiece virtually unknown in the West has been described as “one of the great novels of world literature … to the Chinese as Proust is to the French or Karamazov to the Russians”.
