Vertical Thoughts 2 by Morton Feldman

Tuesday, 31 July 2018, 6 – 7pm

Vertical Thoughts 2 by Morton Feldman

Morton Feldman is one of the composers most strongly associated with Samuel Beckett, since he produced music dedicated to him (For Samuel Beckett) as well as collaborating with him on a number of projects for radio and "opera" (Words and Music, neither). This special event by the Beckett Summer School examines the roots of this affinity through a performance of Vertical Thoughts 2 (1963) — an example of music reduced to its essential elements — followed by a conversation and walk-through of several key Feldman scores with Sarah Sew.

Sarah Sew is Artistic Director of Beckett Chamber Music Series, which recently presented a concert performance of Words and Music. She begins her appointment as Professor of Violin and Head of Strings at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in August. Sarah appears worldwide as a guest concertmaster, director and soloist, previously having held the position of Principal First Violin with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. She has appeared as Guest Leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, English Symphony Orchestra and Balkan Chamber Orchestra and has recorded and toured extensively with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Chamber Orchestra. As a Maisie Lewis Young Artist she made her recital debut at Wigmore Hall. Concert highlights this season include appearances as soloist in Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Uruguay and China. Sarah studied at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar and Royal Academy of Music in London where she was recently elected an Associate (ARAM). Sarah plays a Gennaro Gagliano violin c.1760.

This event will be moderated by Nicholas Johnson.
