Engaging Language: Toward Critical Content-Based Instruction (CCBI)

A public lecture by Dr. Shinji Sato (Princeton University, USA) on Japanese language education. Organised by the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies & CLCS.

In this talk I will demonstrate how it is possible for language educators and parents to realize “engaging language” education that is open to “diverse languages and cultures.” By showing many examples from Japanese, heritage, and early-childhood education, I would like to pose questions such as “What is language/culture?” “Who is constructing language/culture?” “What role do children/learners play in society?” and “Why do we need critical thinking?” I will also introduce “Critical Content-Based Instruction (CCBI)” to language education and talk about why we need language education that is open to “diverse languages and cultures.”

*Please note this lecture will be delivered in Japanese
