Debt: A Natural History

Public lecture by Daniel Lord Smail (Harvard University)

Daniel Lord Smail is Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of History at Harvard and is the world’s leading authority in the field of neurohistory. In particular, he has written extensively on deep history and, in doing so, has drawn on the biological sciences to address the major methodological and theoretical underpinnings of approaches to the human past. His books include On Deep History and the Brain (2008), and, with Andrew Shryock and others, Deep History: The Architecture of Past and Present (2011). His most recent book is Legal Plunder: Households and Debt Collection in Late Medieval Europe (2016). He will talk on the ‘natural history’ of debt drawing on evidence from the biological sciences as well as from history.  The lecture is sponsored by Trinity College Dublin Wellcome Trust Institutional Strategic Support Fund in association with Transnational Ireland.
