‘No Irishness intended’:
Samuel Beckett, Thomas MacGreevy, and Irish Visual Modernism

The Samuel Beckett Summer School is pleased to partner with the National Gallery of Ireland in presenting a public lecture for general audiences by Professor Luke Gibbons.

The lecture will feature visual illustrations as well as a brief question period afterwards. Attendees are encouraged to explore the gallery in the hour before the lecture begins.

Luke Gibbons has taught as Professor of Irish Studies at Maynooth University and at the University of Notre Dame, USA. He has published widely on Irish culture, film, literature, and the visual arts, as well as on aesthetics and politics. His most recent publications include Joyce’s Ghosts: Ireland, Modernism and Memory (University of Chicago Press); (Co-editor), Charles O’Conor: Life and Works (Dublin: Four Courts Press); ‘Introduction,’ to Dorothy Macardle, The Uninvited (Dublin: Tramp Press), and Limits of the Visible: Representing the Irish Great Famine (Quinnipiac University/Cork University Press). Among his forthcoming publications are ‘Afterword’ to Away from it All: Aran Diaries, 1941—1956, of Ernie O’Malley (Lilliput Press, 2017), and ‘Introduction’ to Dorothy Macardle, The Unforeseen (Tramp Press, 2017).
