Bowen Wang

Bowen Wang is a second-year PhD student in School of English, fully funded by CSC-TCD Joint Scholarship Programme. He received his MSc in Literature and Modernity at University of Edinburgh, following the completion of his BA in English Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University, with an exchange year in English/American Studies at University of Southern Denmark.

Bowen’s current project concerns the approach of intermediality between literature and visual art, namely the metamorphosis of ut pictura poesis in the early twentieth century. He tries to explore how the artisthood of this dual identity as painter-poets (i.e. Mina Loy, e. e. cummings, Djuna Barnes) is constructed and how their poetical and pictorial activities are interacted and transformed among different media, disciplines, and cultures, finally forming their cross-artistic experimentation and the genesis of aesthetic modernity.

His research interests include modernism and postmodernism; intermediality between literature and art (word-image intersection, ekphrasis, illustration, graphic narrative, and visual culture); ut pictura poesis; experimental poetry and poetics; avant-garde art movement and aesthetics; and twentieth-century critical theory.
