Pak Hei Chan

I am a third-year PhD student of School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication and I am supervised by Dr. Lorna Carson. I have a MA in English Literature and Linguistics (University of Aberdeen) and a MSc in International Relations and International Law (University of Aberdeen).

My research aims to investigate the national identity issue in Hong Kong from the linguistic perspective by examining the link between language proficiency, language attitudes, and language use. The study has one overarching research question, which seeks to determine whether and how language proficiency, language attitude and language use are related to identity construction in Hong Kong, in terms of Cantonese, Mandarin and English languages.
