Andrew Hill

Andrew Hill is a PhD candidate in his second year of research in the Department of Classics. He received his BA in University College Cork and his MPhil in Trinity College Dublin, and has a research background in ancient North African revolt from Ptolemaic Egypt to Carthage.

Andrew's current research investigates whether the sensitivity of Tunisian grain production to drought-induced failure was a factor contributing to the outbreak of the ‘Mercenary War’ (241-237) – Carthage’s most brutal conflict. Combining traditional text-based scholarship with data obtained through polar ice-cores, his is an interdisciplinary approach to a question which crosses the threshold between the classics and the environmental humanities.
