In February 2015, the Trinity Long Room Hub was delighted to welcome Prof Patrick Joyce as a Visiting Research Fellow.
Professor Joyce is a Professorial Fellow in History at the University of Edinburgh and Professor of Modern History Emeritus at the University of Manchester. He was appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Trinity Long Room Hub in collaboration with the School of Histories and Humanities.
His research relates to two Trinity College research themes: ‘Identities in Transformation’ and ‘Making Ireland’. The focus of Prof Joyce’s visit was to conduct research for his third book on the theme of freedom and power in modern Britain, The Children of Freedom: A History of My Times. This follows The Rule of Freedom (Verso, 2003) and The State of Freedom (CUP, 2013).
The first part of the new book is published in Field Day Review, 2014 as "The Journey West", a discussion of memory, time and history. He will explore the inheritance of a liberal culture and polity in Britain and Ireland since 1945. He is an interdisciplinary historian, interested in all aspects of state history. He is also engaged in collborative work on the theme of Foucalt, political life and history.
