School of Social Sciences and Philosophy Secures Athena SWAN Bronze award.

Sep 09, 2021

The School of Social Sciences and Philosophy is delighted to announce it has secured an Athena SWAN Bronze award in the latest round of awards.

The Athena Swan (Scientific Women’s Academic Network) Charter is an international framework which is used to support and transform gender equality within higher education and research. Universities and their Departments can apply for Bronze, Silver and Gold awards; with each representing progress made in relation to gender equality.

The Schools submission was endorsed by the Head of School, Prof. Carol Newman. The application process involves the gathering of quantitative and qualitative data broken down by gender followed by the writing-up and devising of an Action Plan for gender equality.

The School’s Athena SWAN Co-Champions welcomed the result for the School, recognising the incredible work by all members of the School’s Athena SWAN Committee and the engagement of the wider School, and anticipating the further embedding of EDI principles into the life of the School, which continues with the creation of the School’s EDI Committee.
