content: ICON project - News & Events | Trinity College Dublin EU team to detect earthquakes and infrastructure damage using internet cables Posted on: 22 December 2025 Researchers have begun a new €5 million EU-funded project that will allow fibre optic cable lines under our roads, fields and seas to double up as sensors that spot earthquakes and infrastructure damage, monitor traffic, and detect changes in the natural environment. An interdisciplinary team specialising in photonics is developing sensors that read tiny changes in the light travelling through fibre, to see whether Europe’s internet cables could soon do far more than carry data. Light travelling through a fibre cable reacts to vibration, pressure and heat. By analysing these tiny changes, the same cable that delivers our broadband and Netflix can also reveal what is happening in the ground around it. With Europe facing more extreme weather, ageing infrastructure and rising demand for early warning systems, authorities need broader and more continuous information than existing sensors can provide. Most environmental monitoring relies on isolated sensors that only cover small areas, which means early signs of ground movement or flooding often go unnoticed. By using cables that are already in the ground, the project aims to offer a far cheaper and far broader source of information than any system built from scratch. In time, this could give public authorities a way to track environmental shifts across thousands of kilometres without installing separate equipment. Recent incidents of accidental damage and suspected sabotage of subsea and terrestrial cables have highlighted how vulnerable Europe’s communications and energy networks can be. The project will test whether fibres can also act as an early warning system for unusual vibrations or disturbances that may signal accidental or malicious tampering. The ICON project is led by the CONNECT Research Ireland Centre, headquartered at Trinity College Dublin, together with a network of academic and industrial partners across Europe. Dr Aleksandra Kaszubowska, Trinity, project coordinator, said: “ICON takes critical infrastructure security to a new level, by including physical layer monitoring. Communication links are critical for energy production, transport and finance. Many fibre routes sit alongside gas pipelines, power lines or wind-farm links. As a result, the sensing system could also flag accidental or malicious damage to critical infrastructure, whether that is from anchor strikes on subsea lines or underground construction work. ICON offers much more than mere environmental monitoring.” Giving cables a second job Europe has a vast network of fibres running beneath streets and along coastlines. Today, they are used only for communications. ICON wants to give them a second job: to listen for movement, heat and other signals that indicate what is happening nearby. The project is based on a concept known as joint communication and sensing. This means the same strand of fibre carries internet traffic while also running a low-level optical signal used for measurements. The challenge is to let both tasks happen at once without affecting the quality of the connection. To manage this, ICON is developing two key tools. The first is an “intent interpreter”, which converts simple requests into technical instructions. For example, if a civil protection agency wants to check for unusual ground movement along a particular route, the system works out how to run the measurement while keeping normal internet traffic flowing. The second tool is a digital twin: a live virtual model of the network that shows how the fibres are behaving at any moment. Operators can use it to test different sensing tasks before switching them on, helping to avoid disruption. If the project succeeds, the fibres running across a city could help monitor road congestion or detect damaged infrastructure. Subsea cables might pick up early signs of underwater landslides or changes in ocean conditions. Long rural routes could support earthquake monitoring where there are few traditional sensors. ICON will test these ideas first in the lab and then through field trials, including work on a production subsea cable later in the project. These trials will examine how sensing behaves in real-world conditions and how well the system copes with the noise of heavy data traffic. Strengthening Europe’s networks The ICON team say the technology could support climate monitoring, transport planning and disaster response. Because the fibres are already in the ground, the approach could give governments and scientists a large stream of useful environmental data at relatively low cost. The aim is to make better use of the infrastructure that is already there. “Millions of kilometres of fibre run across Europe,” Dr Kaszubowska said. “These cables are stable, widespread and highly sensitive. We want to understand how they can help us see what is happening in the world in real time, without building separate sensor networks.” ICON will run for three years until 2027. The team will first test the sensing methods in controlled settings, then work with telecom operators and public agencies on pilot sites. Findings will be shared openly with industry and research bodies to help wider adoption. If trials go well, the technology could begin appearing on major fibre routes later in the decade, turning everyday internet cables into a new source of environmental insight for Europe. content: Women in Philanthropy - News & Events | Trinity College Dublin Women providing philanthropic leadership to deliver inclusive, long-term social change Posted on: 05 March 2026 Women philanthropists in Ireland are values driven, deeply engaged and seeking to deliver inclusive, long-term social change as well as support for front-line services, according to new research from Trinity College Dublin. The study is the first in-depth qualitative exploration of contemporary women’s philanthropy in Ireland. It was conducted by Trinity Business School’s Centre for Social Innovation in partnership with Community Foundation Ireland and Trinity Development and Alumni. The report, entitled ‘Women and Philanthropy in Ireland: From hidden presence to recognised influence’, was launched by Professor Mary McAleese, Chancellor of Trinity, at an event yesterday morning [March 4th]. The study involved a review of existing research, consultation with international scholars and practitioners, and 38 semi-structured interviews (30 women philanthropists and eight philanthropic advisors).  Identifying patterns of engagement and key factors and motivations, the report provides new insights into how women in Ireland engage with, shape, and lead philanthropy. Ireland has a long tradition of generosity rooted in community, religion, and voluntary action, but organised philanthropy, particularly women’s philanthropy, has received little academic or policy attention, explains co-author of the report Dr Gemma Donnelly-Cox, Associate Professor, Centre for Social Innovation in Trinity Business School. “Our research finds that women in Ireland are giving in ways that are thoughtful, values-driven, personal and strategic. They contribute financial support, time, networks, advocacy, and leadership.  “We also find that many aim to address systemic challenges, invest in long-term solutions, and strengthen communities locally, nationally, and globally. There is a clear giving journey, from early experiences, to building trust, engaging with organisations, and leaving a legacy.” Key findings: Women are highly engaged philanthropists donating significant financial resources as well as contributing time, expertise, networks and advocacy. Women are strategic philanthropists seeking impactful systemic, long-term solutions. Women’s philanthropic journeys often paralleled life journeys, changing to mirror what is important in their life at the time. Women have a strong cultural preference for discretion; however, some women increasingly embrace visibility to inspire others. Report authors Dr Mario Gallo, Dr Sheila Cannon and Lian Wang   Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of Community Foundation Ireland, said: "In Community Foundation Ireland, we see women in philanthropy delivering real and transformative impact. Children and women are accessing trauma supports, places of safety and greater legal protections from gender-based violence. Education, training and work are more accessible. Local and national climate actions are happening. “This research shows core values, personal and family experiences and a desire to better understand key issues all motivate women’s giving. Women philanthropists contribute far more than financial support – they also invest their time, energy and skills." Dr Sheila Cannon, Associate Professor, Centre for Social Innovation in Trinity Business School, and co-author of the report, said: “This research challenges outdated assumptions about women’s giving. Women in Ireland are not passive donors. They are strategic, values-driven and deeply engaged in shaping social change. Women’s giving is often large in scale. As Ireland builds its philanthropic ecosystem, this report identifies women not as a niche group but as a strategic force in driving inclusive, long-term social change. “This study addresses a critical evidence gap by exploring how women in Ireland engage with and shape philanthropy today. Further research is now needed for expanded philanthropy mapping, longitudinal research, and comparative international studies to deepen understanding of women’s philanthropic impact.” Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Linda Doyle, said: “It is really important to acknowledge the role of women in philanthropy. TCD/COLUMBIA DUAL BA Programme The new Dual BA Programme is unique in that students will graduate from the two leading universities with two degrees over the course of four years. The inaugural cohort will pursue a rigorous undergraduate education in the areas of the arts and humanities, spanning the two continents. They will spend their first two years at Trinity, studying one of four areas—English Studies, European Studies, History, or Middle Eastern and European Languages and Cultures. They will then go on to study at Columbia for their final two years, completing a core curriculum and several majors. During their time in the programme, Dual BA students will be part of two vibrant academic communities with access to abundant extracurricular options on campus and beyond, as well as internship and entrepreneurial opportunities in both Dublin and New York City. In year four, the research project, co-supervised by academics in Trinity and Columbia University, will give students the opportunity to develop their interests. content: Molecular map - News & Events | Trinity College Dublin Scientists unveil molecular map that could unlock new treatments for heart and lung diseases Posted on: 07 April 2026 The map uncovers how an important human receptor involved in blood clotting and inflammation works. This advance could help us design better drugs for conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. The study, which was led by an international team including researchers from Trinity and published in leading international journal, Nature Communications, used advanced cryo-electron microscopy to capture high-res images of the “thromboxane A₂ receptor ” while it was active and primed to send signals across the membrane to the cell interior.  This receptor is found on blood platelets and many other cell types, where it helps regulate blood clot formation, blood vessel contraction, and inflammatory responses.  “Thromboxane A₂ itself is a short-lived signalling molecule that disappears within seconds in the body, which has always made it difficult for us to study how it activates the receptor,” said Dr Pawel Krawinski, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Trinity’s School of Medicine and School of Biochemistry and Immunology.  “To overcome this, we used a new technique which allowed us to visualise its structure in extraordinary detail and that in turn helped us learn how it interacts with signalling proteins inside the cell.”  The structural images from their work revealed several surprising features. It turns out that unlike many related receptors, the thromboxane receptor uses an unusual “activation switch” that triggers internal signalling. And the researchers also discovered signalling molecules likely enter the receptor from within the cell membrane, rather than from outside the cell.  Dr Krawinski added: “These insights are fascinating to us, but they are far more than just structural details as they could have important medical implications too. The thromboxane receptor plays a role in multiple diseases, including cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary disorders, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and fibrotic lung disease. It is also overactive in some cancers and inflammatory conditions.  “By revealing exactly how activating molecules bind and trigger the receptor, the new molecular map provides a blueprint for developing drugs that can selectively block or fine-tune its activity. Such drugs could help prevent harmful blood clotting, reduce excessive blood vessel constriction, or limit inflammatory signalling linked to disease.” The study also sheds light on rare inherited mutations in the receptor that cause bleeding disorders. Understanding how these mutations alter the receptor’s structure may help researchers better diagnose and treat patients with these conditions.  What are the potential implications of this research? Overall, the research offers an unprecedented view of a clinically important signalling system. By combining structural biology, computational modelling, and laboratory experiments, the team has provided a detailed molecular map that could guide the design of safer and more effective therapies targeting the thromboxane receptor in the future. content: Eclipse 2026 - News & Events | Trinity College Dublin Scientists take to the skies to observe 2026 Solar Eclipse from Flying Observatory Posted on: 10 August 2026 On 12 August a team of scientists from Ireland and Italy will take to the skies off Ireland’s west coast to observe one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena: a total solar eclipse. The mission will provide a rare opportunity to examine the Sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, and gain new insights into how the Sun’s magnetic field shapes and influences it. Scientists from Trinity, the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), the Irish Air Corps, and Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) will fly an advanced solar telescope (E-CorMag) aboard an Irish Air Corps Airbus C295 aircraft to study the Sun’s atmosphere during the total solar eclipse. The next-gen E-CorMag, developed by INAF, has been built using spare flight components from two European Space Agency solar missions – Proba-3 and Solar Orbiter. Although it sits far above the visible surface of the Sun, the corona can reach temperatures of around two million degrees Celsius: hundreds of times hotter than the surface below. And scientists still do not fully understand why this happens. The E-CorMag has been designed to help answer that question by measuring the magnetic field of the corona. These magnetic fields are thought to play a major role in shaping the Sun’s atmosphere and releasing huge amounts of energy into space. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon blocks out the Sun’s bright disc, briefly revealing the faint, glowing corona around it. So for just a few precious minutes, scientists get a natural window into a part of the Sun that is usually hidden from view. During the observation, the aircraft’s bubble window will be opened, giving the telescope a clear view of the eclipsed Sun. This means the instrument can observe without looking through standard aircraft windows, which can blur or distort the images. Flying also gives the science team a major advantage: the aircraft can be positioned to spend as much time as possible in the Moon’s shadow, while also reducing the risk of clouds blocking the view from the ground. The Air Corps eclipse expedition will complement measurements from space missions, including Solar Orbiter and Proba-3, providing an additional perspective on the Sun’s dynamic atmosphere. Together, these observations will contribute to a more complete understanding of the magnetic processes that govern the solar atmosphere and influence the space environment throughout the Solar System. “The total solar eclipse gives us a unique opportunity to observe the sun’s atmosphere, called the corona, explained Joe McCauley, Senior Experimental Officer in Trinity’s School of Physics. “Trinity is taking the lead on setting up and running the solar telescope that will be used to image the corona from an open window at 13,000 feet.” Along with Trinity’s Joe McCauley, the Irish-Italian eclipse team includes Lucia Abbo, Gerardo Capobianco, Hervé Haudem (INAF); Ciarán O’Callaghan (TU Dublin); and Prof. Peter Gallagher (Director of DIAS Dunsink Observatory and Adjunct Professor at Trinity) and Dr Laura Hayes (DIAS, and Trinity alumna). content: Steroids mycobacterium - News & Events | Trinity College Dublin Steroids reduce inflammation in chronic mycobacterial lung infections without limiting antimicrobial defence Posted on: 11 August 2026 Researchers from Trinity and St. James’s Hospital have shown that dexamethasone, a commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory steroid, can reduce harmful inflammation triggered by Mycobacterium avium without weakening the ability of human immune cells to control the infection. The findings suggest dexamethasone may thus offer a new adjuvant approach for better managing nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease. NTM infections present a growing global health challenge, particularly among people with chronic lung disease. Treatment often requires prolonged courses of multiple antibiotics, yet many patients continue to experience symptoms driven by persistent inflammation. Steroids are not routinely used in NTM disease because clinicians have traditionally been cautious about suppressing T cell immune responses during infection.  “Our study suggests that it may be possible to fine-tune this response by reducing damaging inflammation while still preserving the immune defences that help control infection,” said Dr Donal Cox, senior author of the research, which has just been published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases (read it at https://doi.org/10.1093/infdis/jiag394 ). Dr Cox and the research team, based in the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute, investigated how human macrophages, specialised immune cells that act as a first line of defence against infection, respond to Mycobacterium avium.  They found that treatment with dexamethasone significantly reduced infection-driven macrophage metabolic activity while also lowering the production of inflammatory signals. Importantly, the steroid reduced the inflammatory response but did not increase bacterial growth within these key immune cells.  Why did the team undertake this research? Advances in immunometabolism research have shown that immune cell metabolism plays an important role in determining how macrophages respond to infection. While this has been well studied in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, very little is known about how metabolism influences immune responses to NTM.  The Trinity research group has previously demonstrated that dexamethasone alters the metabolism of macrophages infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. They therefore wanted to determine whether similar pathways could be targeted during Mycobacterium avium infection and whether inflammation could be reduced without compromising the body's natural ability to control infection.  Key Findings Production of “inflammatory cytokines”, TNF, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8, which increase inflammation, is markedly reduced following dexamethasone treatment.  Macrophages treated with dexamethasone retain their ability to control Mycobacterium avium. The findings demonstrate that inflammatory responses can be separated from bacterial control in human macrophages.  What is the potential impact of this research? NTM infections are increasing worldwide and Mycobacterium avium complex is among the most common causes of NTM lung disease. Patients require lengthy multidrug antibiotic therapy and chronic inflammation can contribute substantially to symptoms and reduced quality of life for patients, even while on effective antimicrobial treatment. As a result, new treatment options are badly needed. “Current treatment strategies for NTM disease focus primarily on killing the bacteria,” said Dr Cox. “However, inflammation itself can contribute significantly to symptoms and tissue damage in patients, so finding ways to control inflammation without impairing antimicrobial innate immunity offers a potential gateway to much more effective therapies.”  “This study provides evidence that dexamethasone may be able to do this. And although further studies are needed, our findings are exciting because they provide a strong rationale for investigating steroids as potential host-directed therapies in addition to existing antimicrobial treatments.”  Because this study used primary human macrophages and real-time metabolic measurements to investigate how corticosteroids influence immune metabolism during Mycobacterium avium infection, the researchers are especially hopeful that it could be effectively applied in real-life situations.  Prof. Joseph Keane, Professor of Medicine at Trinity, added: “This research demonstrates the central role of glycolysis in the macrophage host response to NTM. This myeloid metabolic shift is sufficient, but not necessary for macrophage antimicrobial effect.
