Biography
Gessica De Angelis is Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics in the Centre for Language and Communication Studies and she is also Fellow of Trinity College Dublin (elected in 2016). She holds a B.A. Hons in Foreign Languages and Literature (English and Russian) from the University of Turin, Italy, an M.A. in Italian from the University of Pittsburgh, USA and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Birkbeck College, University of London, UK. Her main research interests are in multilingual language acquisition, crosslinguistic influence, multilingual language development, multilingualism in the workplace, multilingual testing and assessment, and multilingualism in education. She has published and lectured widely on aspects of individual multilingualism, with a specific interest in the area of language acquisition and the role of background languages in the language acquisition process. She has engaged in international research in Europe and Canada for over two decades. Dr. De Angelis is author of "Third or Additional Language Acquisition" (2007, Multilingual Matters). She is also co-editor of "New Trends in Crosslinguistic Influence and Multilingualism research" (2011, Multilingual Matters), "Learning and teaching in multilingual contexts. Conceptual, sociolinguistic and educational perspectives (2014, Multilingual Matters) and "Crosslinguistic influence and crosslinguistic interaction in multilingual language learning" (2015, Bloombsbury). She is former Vice-President of the International Association of Multilingualism (2009-11; 2011-2013).

- Summary
- The core aim of the study is to investigate the extent to which research findings about bi-/multilingualism, language acquisition and language development in children and adults can be said to be reflected in current practices in the medical profession (General Practitioners and Public Health Nurses) in the Dublin area, and whether individually held beliefs are likely to influence the type of advice families receive.

- Language learning and mathematical learning: is there a multilingual benefit for both?
- Summary
- The study examined whether prior language knowledge and mother tongue literacy provide significant advantages in language learning and/or mathematical learning. The study involved 607 students attending secondary school in France and close collaboration with Dr Rebecca Dahm, University of Toulouse, France. Results were published in the International Journal of Multilingualism.

- Multilingual language development in children with migratory background in the trilingual Ladin school system of South Tyrol, Italy
- Summary
- This 2-year project examines patterns of multilingual language development in immigrant children attending a trilingual (Italian, German, Ladin) school system. All children use a home language that differs from the three official languages of instruction. The research involves collaboration with the Ladin School Board, including researchers, teachers and principals.
