Tell me more about Trinity and the Seanad

In 1937 the new constitution, Bunreacht na hÉireann, introduced university seats into a new Seanad Éireann. Of the total 60 Senators serving today, three are Trinity College Senators (Sean Barrett, Ivana Bacik, David Norris). See more at tcd.ie/about/senators/.

Who can vote?

All graduates admitted to a degree by the university, excluding honorary degrees, who are citizens of Ireland can register to vote. This is not done automatically and the right to vote must be claimed.

How do I know if I am on the register?

Graduates may verify their inclusion in the register at any time; the registers are available for examination at the Academic Registry. You can also contact the office through academic.registry@tcd.ie or call +353 (0)1 896 4500. See tcd.ie/academicregistry/seanad/.

How do I vote?

The Seanad elections for Trinity is by postal vote. The ballot papers are mailed out to the electorate by registered post with a return envelope for casting your vote. Those who are registered should give an address where they will be during postal delivery hours i.e. usually a work address.

How do I ensure I get a ballot paper?

An elector may, at any time, ensure that his/her details are up-to-date by completing the online request form or submitting a request to the Academic Registry.

What do I do if I am not on the register?

Unfortunately, if you are not on the register from 1 June 2015, you will not be able to vote.
