Biography

Dr Andelka M. Phillips' research interests lie in the areas of Information Technology Law and Health and Medical Law. She teaches courses in Information Technology Law at Trinity. Her recent research has focussed on the regulation of direct-to-consumer genetic tests, examining the industry's use of wrap contracts (browsewrap and clickwrap).

Andelka is the convener of the Technology, Law, and Society Research Group.

She is currently working on a book, entitled Buying Your Self on the Internet: Wrap Contracts and Personal Genomics to be published by Edinburgh University Press as part of its Future Law series.

She is also co-editing with Professor Jonathan Herring and Dr Thana Campos Philosophical Foundations of Medical Law, which will be published as part of Oxford University Press' Philosophical Foundations of Law series.

Her current and on-going research is concerned with a variety of issues, including: wrap contracts, consumer protection, artificial intelligence and regulation of robotics, emerging technologies in healthcare (including wearables and implants), surveillance technologies, synthetic biology, cyber security, privacy and data protection, responsible innovation, and the regulation of emerging and disruptive technologies, especially developments in the Internet of Things and smart computing systems. She is also particularly interested in the societal impact of new, emerging, and disruptive technologies.

Andelka completed her doctorate at the University of Oxford and LLM (First Class Honours) from Auckland University. She has previously taught at both the University of Oxford and the University of Auckland. She is also a Research Associate with the University of Oxford's Centre for Health, Law and Emerging Technologies (HeLEX) Centre.

Description

Andelka's research interests lie in the areas of Information Technology Law and Health and Medical Law, primarily in relation to the treatment of genetic information and new and emerging technologies in healthcare and the Internet of Things. Andelka's current research interests include: electronic contracts, regulation of new, emerging, and disruptive technologies, especially developments in healthcare and the Internet of Things more generally and including wearable technology and implants, as well as consumer protection, privacy and data protection, surveillance technologies, artificial intelligence and regulation of robotics, synthetic biology, responsible innovation. She is also particularly interested in the societal impact of new, emerging, and disruptive technologies.
