Postgraduate Certificate in Christian Theology

This Programme enables participants to gain an in-depth knowledge of core issues in contemporary Christian theology. Students are introduced to historical scholarship and to rigorous contemporary theological investigation.

Course Structure

Students for the Postgraduate Certificate in Christian Theology study three modules.  Students choose two core and one optional, elective module. The course is taught over two semesters, September to April.

The two core modules are:
Readings in Classical Theological Texts (Core)
Jesus of Nazareth: Son, Christ, Word (Core)

Elective Modules*
Ministry and Church in a Challenging Era
Christianity of the Celtic World (600-1000 AD)
Political Theology
Nature, Grace and Place: Theology, Maps and Territories**

*Please note, the elective modules available may differ each year.

**Module offered by the M.Phil. in Contextual Theologies and Interfaith Relations.

Lectures are normally on Monday and Thursday evenings.

An Entry to Postgraduate Diploma top up course structure

Having qualified for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Christian Theology students have the option to directly continue their study at the postgraduate diploma level or return to study after an intermission. For the Postgraduate Diploma Students must complete a further two core modules (Violence and Grace in the Human Narrative; First Words: Theology/ies of the Bible), and choose an additional optional module from those available that academic year. 

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE for P.G.Cert. M.Phil. and Ph.D. in CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Loyola Trust four (full-fee) Postgraduate Certificate scholarships of €1,000 each are available. Applicants must:

1.Submit an application for an Postgraduate Certificate in Christian Theology using the central Trinity College application system.

And

2.Send an email of application to Loyola@tcd.ie.

Your application should include a letter (maximum 600 words) explaining why you would like to do the Postgraduate Certificate in Christian Theology and why you think you should be considered for a scholarship.

Scholarship applications for 2021-2022 is closed.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to this course is at graduate level. Applicants will normally hold a good honours degree (minimum 2.1) in theology from a recognized university.

Applicants who have a primary degree in other disciplines will be considered.

Exceptional cases, where applicants do not fully meet the above criteria, but make a reasonable case for admissions otherwise, will be considered by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
