Professor Colin Crouch explored Occupational Structures and Social Models in European Societies in this research seminar aimed at academics and researchers in the fields of sociology, economics and political science. The talk was chaired by Professor Christopher Whelan, Head of the School of Sociology, UCD.

Speaker Biography

Colin Crouch is Professor of Governance and Public Management at Warwick Business School in the UK. He is an economic sociologist, with particular interests in international comparative research at the interface between sociology, politics and the study of work and employment. His writings in comparative political economy constitute a programme of comparative analysis of the regulation of work and employment, the structure and behaviour of organised interest groups, and national governance regimes. He was previously Professor of Comparative Social Institutions at the European University Institute, Florence, and has also held academic positions at Oxford University and LSE. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, member of the Academy of Social Sciences, and External Scientific member of the Max Planck Institute for Social Research at Cologne.

Chair Biography

Christopher T. Whelan joined the School of Sociology in UCD in April 2009 and became Head of School on 1 September 2009. He was formerly a Research Professor at the ESRI. He acted as Chair of the Standing Committee for the Social Sciences of the European Science Foundation from 2002 to 2006 and of the Governing Council of the EU Economic Change, Quality of Life and Social Cohesion (EQUALSOC) Network of Excellence from 2005-2009. His research interests include the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality, quality of life and social mobility and inequality of opportunity. He has published on these topics in leading international academic journals and has contributed as author and editor to a number of volumes dealing with economic and social change in Ireland. He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, associate editor of the European Sociological Review and a member of the editorial board of Longitudinal and Life Course Studies.
