Trinity’s first Formula Student team competes at Silverstone

Posted on: 17 July 2018

Formula Trinity – the University’s first ever Formula Student team – participated in the international Formula Student Competition at Silverstone Race track in the United Kingdom last week.

This is the first time a team from Trinity has taken part in the annual student engineering competition run by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) where university teams from around the world design, build, test and pitch a formula style race car under a fast pace and demanding environment.

The Trinity team consists of 30 Engineering students from various years, who in groups have designed, costed and made a business case for the construction of a race car. The project is a student-driven exercise aided by staff in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. Financial sponsorship was secured from Frank Keane Holdings, Collen Construction, Trinity Alumni and a Crowd Funding exercise. Software licences were granted free of charge by Ricardo, SolidWorks and MathWorks.

Founded in 2017, Formula Trinity is an extra-curricular activity and all team members are volunteers who work outside of College hours. They are split into eight key departments: management, business & media, chassis, powertrain, suspension, steering & braking, electronics and drivetrain. Each member in each department has a unique role in the design and manufacture of the vehicle. This structure allows the team to harbour student ingenuity and to provide opportunities for students looking for a challenge. Everything is done by the students.

Formula Trinity’s mission is to: provide an environment for students where they can learn new skills, explore interests and take part in an international engineering competition; successfully compete at Formula Student UK 2018 and have a fully functional car for July 2019;and bridge the gap between students and industry.
