Trinity College Dublin Excels in QS World University Subject Rankings

Trinity College Dublin continues to feature prominently in the just published QS World University Subject Rankings 2015 and now ranks in the top 50 universities in the world in five subject areas, and in the top 100 universities in a further nine subject areas.

In all, Trinity is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world in 14 subject areas. Along with a further 11 ranked subject areas, Trinity features in the top 200 universities globally in 25 fields.

The subjects in which Trinity is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world include: English Language & Literature (32), Politics & International Studies (33), History (39), Biological Sciences (48) and Modern Languages (49). This year, five Trinity fields feature in the world top 50 (compared with four fields in 2014).  This is also the first time that an Irish university has achieved a top 50 ranking in Biological Sciences.

Trinity is also ranked in the QS top 100 universities globally in each of nine other subjects: Chemistry, Computer Science and Information Systems, Education, Geography, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Philosophy and Psychology.  In all of these subject areas but one, Trinity is the highest ranked university in Ireland.

The just-published ranking is based on the expert opinion of 85,062 academics and 41,910 employers, alongside the analysis of 17.3 million research papers and over 100 million citations denoting research impact.

Commenting on the significance of the achievement, the Dean and Vice President of Research, Professor Vinny Cahill says: “This achievement is a testimony to our globally competitive research and to our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of teaching. Trinity’s strong performance in these subjects reflects the quality students that Trinity attracts and the commitment of its staff to their education.   It is particularly important that employers as well as academics were consulted for these rankings, demonstrating how well-regarded Trinity graduates are by employers worldwide.”

Trinity College Dublin Excels in QS World University Subject Rankings

Trinity College Dublin features prominently in the just published QS Subject Rankings 2012,  with  a top 50 ranking in four subjects and top 100 ranking in a further fourteen areas. The College’s leading 50 subjects include English, Language & Literature in 14th place worldwide; 38th in History; 40th in Geography; and 45th globally in Politics & International Studies.

TCD is ranked in the QS top 100 universities in the world in each of fourteen other subjects: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Computer Sciences & Information; Economics & Econometrics; Education; Electrical Engineering; Law; Mathematics; Medicine; Modern Languages; Philosophy; Physics & Astronomy; Psychology and Sociology.

Trinity College is the leading Irish university in all of these subjects based on a survey of over 600 universities from 27 countries in the world. With over 50,000 responses from academics and employers, it is the largest survey of its kind to date. Universities are scored according to academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact (citations).

Commenting on the significance of the achievement, TCD Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast says: “This achievement is a testimony to our globally competitive research and to our commitment to the highest standards of teaching. Trinity’s strong performance in these subjects also reflects the quality students that Trinity attracts.   It is particularly important that employers as well as academics were consulted for these rankings, demonstrating how well regarded Trinity graduates are by employers worldwide.”

Also commenting on the achievement, Head of Research at QS, Ben Sowter says: “Ireland’s strength in the arts and humanities subjects places it among the global elite in these disciplines. The nation should be proud of their achievements in the ranking as it clearly points to excellence in the country’s higher education system.”
