Trinity 425

Posted on: 07 April 2017

To celebrate the 425th anniversary of the founding of Trinity College Dublin, a book of photographs taken by staff, students and alumni and an essay by the Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast has been published.

Available to buy in the Library shop, the book with images selected from over 500 submissions, shows the College in all moods and all seasons, at work and at play – from student elections to graduations, from experiments in the lab to action on the sports field, from research in the library to acting on the stage; from fundraising for charity to lolling about in College Park; from the venerable Long Room to the avant-garde Science Gallery.

“The book captures a time and a place.  It will give you, I hope, an impression of our university’s unique combination of tradition and innovation, of being immersed in a vibrant city yet a place apart for reflection and thought, of a place sensitive to is history yet with a relentless focus on the future,” commented the Provost.

The University was founded by the drive, energy and vision of Dublin’s leading citizens.  While the Queen of England, Elizabeth I, granted the founding character in 1592, the money for the foundation was raised by subscription from all over Ireland.  Such was the support of Dublin Corporation that a 45-acre site outside city walls was granted to the new foundation, and the academic life of Ireland’s first university began.  425 years later we now have the perspectives of over 50 photographers collected in this volume, all experiencing the great university in different ways.

The Provost’s essay, entitled ‘A Short Walk’ describes his walk around the campus, highlighting key buildings and what happens in them, along with other focal points in an engaging way.

The book is available in the Library shop, priced €16.00 and is available to purchase online. All proceeds from sales of the book go to Trinity Development & Alumni.
