Deirdre McNamara is an Associate Professor and Interim Head of Department of Clinical Medicine and Consultant Gastroenterologist at Tallaght Hospital, Dublin.
She completed her Irish Higher Specialist Training and obtained an MD from Trinity College Dublin in Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention before spending time at the Otto Von Gueirke University in Germany as an Endoscopy Fellow. She was awarded a diploma in cancer prevention from the National Cancer Institute, following a training sabbatical in the USA before returning to TCD as a Project Manager for a Cancer Prevention Institute at Tallaght Hospital. She was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 2004 with a specific interest in Colorectal Cancer Screening and GI Physiology.
Since her appointment in 2010 to Trinity College and AMNCH, she has built up local translational research portfolios in GI Cancer Prevention, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and medical technology, including a number of successful research themes supported by multidisciplinary collaborations within TAGG and external institutions. She has a strong track record in bi-directional research with over 70 original scientific papers, several book chapters and numerous presentations to learned societies. As Co-director of TAGG, she endeavours to support and foster clinical excellence through focused translational research programmes.
